United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented Beyond Right & Wrong to the General Assembly in New York on 13 September 2012. Two commentators in the film spoke during the session: Lord John Alderdice, Chairman of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, and Marina Cantacuzino, founder and director of The Forgiveness Project. After this screening, the United Nations adopted a resolution titled “Strengthening the Role of Mediation and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, Conflict Prevention and Resolution” (A/RES/66/291).
During the session, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon quoted Desmond Tutu, who said, “Forgiving is not forgetting. It is actually remembering and not using your right to hit back.”
Beyond Right & Wrong received runner-up for Best Documentary at the LA Jewish Film Festival. The LA Jewish Film Festival celebrates the experiences and history of the Jewish people through film and fosters the Jewish community and its relationship to other communities in Los Angeles. Beyond Right & Wrong’s delicate portrayal of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting the pain and humanity of people on both sides of the violent struggle, earned the film’s place among the other illuminating documentaries featured by the LA Jewish Film Festival.
Beyond Right & Wrong screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF), a prestigious forum for independent filmmakers that features documentaries, narratives, and shorts. The HIFF was the East Coast premiere for multiple Academy Award-winning films, including Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech, Black Swan, Argo, and Silver Linings Playbook. Co-director Lekha Singh was proud to present Beyond Right & Wrong, her directorial debut, alongside the other powerful films that the HIFF consistently selects.
Beyond Right & Wrong won Best Documentary Film at Ireland’s Fingal Film Festival, which showcases emerging filmmakers from the local Fingal community and from the larger national and international film community. We are proud of Beyond Right & Wrong’s participation in a festival dedicated to introducing films from around the world to local talent and introducing local talent to the world.
Beyond Right & Wrong received The American Psychological Association’s (APA) first Best Avant Garde Film award. This award recognizes life-changing films that use “psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives.” After the screening of Beyond Right & Wrong, multiple viewers thanked co-director Lekha Singh for sharing this transformative documentary, and some even confided that they would reconnect with their estranged parents.
