THE COLLECTIVE HOSTS FORGIVENESS PANEL WITH KWEKU MANDELA, SHIZA SHAHID, JAMES FERRELL AND LEKHA SINGH

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 18, 2014 — The Collective will host a Beyond Right & Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness documentary screening and panel discussion on Saturday, Jan. 18 during its 6th Annual Sundance Collective Conference featuring Kweku Mandela, grandson of the late Nelson Mandela; Shiza Shahid, co-founder and CEO of the Malala Fund; James Ferrell, managing partner at the Arbinger Institute; and Lekha Singh, co-director and executive producer of the award-winning documentary. The panel, hosted by multimedia anchor and reporter Nkoyo Iyamba, will accompany the announcement of the Beyond Right & Wrong 2014 Viewership Campaign.

The viewership campaign will focus on garnering 1,000,000 unique online viewers for Beyond Right & Wrong, which follows victims of three devastating conflicts — the Rwandan Genocide,  the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Troubles in Northern Ireland — as they struggle to forgive without sacrificing their need for justice. This transformative documentary allows viewers to delve deeply into the familiar battles for reconciliation and recovery, opening their eyes to the multifaceted expression of human resilience.

“I believe strongly that there are examples from many men and women of how we can and should co-exist with each other,” says Kweku Mandela. “The most basic and important part of this is that every individual in the world should have access to basic human rights. This film and campaign allows us to look at and educate ourselves on how despite our differences in culture, gender, religion or wealth, our rights are something we all should work towards making universal for all people of this earth and until that is done, people like my grandfather and their legacy will never truly be fulfilled. It all starts with dialogue and this campaign is another step in that direction.”

Co-directed by Roger Spottiswoode (Turner and Hooch, Tomorrow Never Dies) and Singh, Beyond Right & Wrong has won multiple awards (Best Avant-Garde Film in 2013, American Psychological Association; Best Documentary Film, Fingal Film Festival; Runner-up for Best Documentary, LA Jewish Film Festival) and amassed worldwide attention since its initial release last year. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented the film to the General Assembly before they adopted a far-reaching resolution for the peaceful mediation of conflict.

“The stories broke my heart yet gave me enormous hope,” says Singh. “I hope this film illustrates the strength of the survivors and expresses the possibility of an alternative path towards justice, a solution rooted in neither violence nor hatred.”

The Beyond Right & Wrong Viewership Campaign will launch on FilmRaise.com, an online platform that harnesses the assets and resources of top human rights organizations to increase the viewership of film. By promoting and increasing viewership of Beyond Right & Wrong through their email databases and social media channels, partnering charities (Anasazi Foundation, Free the Children, Malala Fund, Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, Witness and Women for Women International) can raise funds for their causes. For every 10,000 viewers they secure, partnering charities will collect $5,000 from a $500,000 prize pot made possible by generous donations from individuals and supporting organizations like Operation Kids Foundation.
